Furnishing Options
Recycling furnishings from your house to build someone’s home
Funded in part by
Furnishing Options is a program of Employment Options, run by volunteers, that mobilizes community support to obtain surplus furniture and other household goods and provide them to low-income individuals and families struggling to create homes in the Marlborough area. Additionally, Furnishing Options offers children and adults the experience of generosity and meaningful social action, and provides a setting for vocational skills training.
What We Do:
- Help low income residents of the greater Marlborough area help themselves by providing them with materials they need to create a healthy, functional home.
- Assist human service agencies to help their clients.
- Encourage and facilitate generosity and social action in children and adults, activating the community and training the next generation.
- Offer an environment where people can be trained in vocational skills.
- Provide not only basic household goods, but also items that make a residence “homey.”
- Open an attractive path to repurpose material that would otherwise enter the solid waste stream.
Accepting donated goods
Household goods can be donated by individuals and businesses. These goods need to be clean and in good working order, and free from pests such as bedbugs. (An informal criterion: “Would you give this to your cousin?”). We prefer to accept donations at our site to conserve our limited volunteer and financial resources. However, we will pick up donations in Marlborough, Hudson and adjoining towns for a small contribution. In the future, Furnishing Options will seek partnerships and collection drives with local faith-based groups, schools and businesses, in addition to direct appeals to the general community.

Distribution of donated goods
Household goods are distributed to individuals and families who are referred by a known local agency or a professional such as clergy or a school nurse. These local agencies/professionals are responsible for performing income verifications and needs assessments of the clients. Our emphasis is on essentials such as beds, sofas, dressers, cribs, kitchenettes, pots, pans and dishes, but also include items to make a residence “homey” such as lamps, framed pictures and curtains. In the future, selections will be made by clients at our site, possibly with help from the assisting agency. However, until we have a suitable location, agencies and their clients view our web-based display of inventory and goods are then made available for pick-up by the agency and/or client.
Items we do NOT accept
Furnishing Options Health Statement:
Furnishing Options only accepts household goods from single-family dwellings and cannot accept donations of goods from multi-family residences. After careful consideration and strong guidance and advice from local health professionals, we have concluded that for the health and safety of the recipients of furniture and the very strong likelihood of the spread of certain types of insects and pests, more prominent in multi-family dwellings, we cannot accept items from these types of buildings.
While we value each and every donation to Furnishing Options and are truly grateful for the community’s support, we also have to take into consideration the health and safety of the individuals and families we serve. Local health professionals and the Board of Health have led us to this decision.
Thank you for your understanding.
